Catahouligan Expresso – Sept 2011

Hey it’s Me!!! Do you remember me!? It’s been quite some time and I hope you haven’t forgotten bout little ole’ me. Needless to say, it has been rather busy at World Headquarters of Catahoula Coffee, but I am sure it will settle down once baby “Timber” arrives!!  So let’s get this party started……shall we!!!

Save the Date:  OCTOBER 16th -
TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY

In support and appreciation to all of our local teachers, Catahoula Coffee is sponsoring a day that teachers with current and valid credentials may come and enjoy an afternoon for FREE!! Yes that is right, FREE drinks, food and entertainment. So get the word out to our local teachers…..

Commercial – Photo Shoot:

Also on OCTOBER 17th  at 9am…… We need friendly happy customers to join us as we film a short commercial for Catahoula Coffee. The storyline is: As the Coffee Wars continue to wage out of control in SF, cross the bay over to the Scenic Beautiful Coastal Hamlet of Richmond, CA sits Catahoula Coffee. Tag Line: You meet the nicest people at Catahoula!! (Think a 1950’s PSA – Leave it to Beaver – Pleasantville type of feel.)

Operation “Mi Pueblo” –

Ok….Let’s kick Operation Mi Pueblo into high gear!!! Please “ Copy” the following brief statement (add more if you choose), click on the email, “Paste”, sign you name and “Send” to the chairman of Mi Pueblo. More the Merrier. We need to have the old Lucky/Albertson’s store on the corner of MacDonald and San Pablo Avenue.

Dear Mr. Chavez,

Mi Pueblo would be a welcome addition to our neighborhood of Richmond, CA. There is a wonderful space (formerly Lucky/Alberston’s) at the corner of MacDonald and San Pablo Avenue. Please give this location consideration!!!! This space would not only serve Richmond but the communities of: El Cerrito, El Sobrante and San Pablo.

Most sincerely,

(You Name)

Coffee:

Many folks have talked to me concerning: “What’s going on with the Price of Coffee?” And while some think I am channeling a slick salesman when I complain about the prices I can honestly say: “If I know what I know now….I may not have opened Catahoula Coffee!” It is that bad!!

But let me not go all gloomy on you….but it’s a fact I must look at in continuing this business model. I still will not sacrifice quality nor the freshness of our coffee. But it is crazy now! Much like when you roll up to the gas pump….Coffee is now a commodity. And like our gas prices, coffee seems to will follow the same pattern: Go up and up, come down to tease us but the net result are higher prices. So much for coffee being the “Affordable Luxury” we enjoy.

The following graphs may help explain it:

I do not mean to be a “Debbie Downer”…..I plan to stay around. The business model has changed and plans of expansion are put on hold. But one thing I will not compromise on is Catahoula Coffee’s quality, freshness and giving a fair value to all Catahouligans….. Worldwide!!

I appreciate all of your support and encouragement…. See ya on Sunday Oct 16th !!

If you have any questions about any coffees. Please do not hesitate to contact me:
timber@catahoulacoffee.com

Thanks again…..

take care, timber

** If you would like to be taken off this list…no problem…..
Just let me know. Thanks **

Catahoula Coffee in the News…….

Cafe Med, Alfred Peet & Catahoula Coffee within one article….that’s not bad company to keep.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/08/06/BAUL1KJK1B.DTL

Until the 1950s, Berkeley was a very sensible, mild-mannered college town.

Then in 1957, on Telegraph Avenue, the latte was invented. The place has been fretting and fidgeting ever since.

“When you think ‘wired,’ what do you think? You think Berkeley,” said Richard Hom, a local business owner and coffee aficionado. “This is where coffee is.”

Hom and his colleagues at the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce are celebrating the city’s long love affair with coffee, caffeine addiction and the art of sitting in cafes all day with the first Berkeley Coffee and Tea Festival.

The festival, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Shattuck Hotel, will feature more than 30 coffee roasters, cafes and tea purveyors. It will include panel discussions on brewing the perfect cup, a demonstration of a Japanese tea ceremony, and classes on fair trade versus organic beans. There will also be pastries and plenty of free samples for the twitching hordes.

“It’ll be fun – everyone will get really caffeinated,” Hom said. “That’s why we’re stopping it at 1 p.m.”

Long before there was Starbucks or Peet’s, there was Caffe Mediterraneum. Opened in 1956 by the owner of Caffe Trieste in San Francisco’s North Beach, the original Caffe Med was a kiosk in a bookstore at Haste and Telegraph, just south of UC Berkeley.

Students, of course, have always imbibed huge quantities of coffee. But Caffe Med offered something different: espresso. The first cafe-style espresso maker was invented in the late 1940s in Italy, and by 1956 the wondrous contraption had made its way to Berkeley.

“It caught on right away. Espresso opened a whole new world,” said Caffe Med’s current owner, Craig Becker, who bought the venerable coffee shop five years ago with his brother.

The latte was invented after customers started complaining that espresso was too bitter. So the barista at Caffe Med began adding steamed milk, and the latte was born.

Caffe Med still creates lattes the way it did in the 1950s: two shots of light-roasted, freshly ground espresso in a 16-ounce glass, topped with whole milk steamed until it is smooth, light and shiny, like, Becker insisted, chrome.

“You shouldn’t see any bubbles in the foam,” said Becker, who’s a frequent judge in the Western Regional Barista Championships.

The dawn of espresso fundamentally changed Berkeley. Sitting in cafes all day was no longer considered a sign of laziness. It was a political act.

Allen Ginsberg wrote part of “Howl” in Caffe Med. Dustin Hoffman stared forlornly out the Med’s windows in “The Graduate.”

Mario Savio and the Black Panthers hatched revolutions over espresso and cigarettes at the Med.

And then, across town, came Peet’s. Dutch immigrant Alfred Peet introduced Berkeley to strong, dark, custom roasted coffee, and a new generation of addicts was born.

“Before he passed, Alfred Peet told me he chose Berkeley because he wanted to be in a place where there was curiosity of mind,” said Erica Hess, Peet’s spokeswoman. “He wanted to be where people appreciated the quality of the bean and how the roasting could coax out certain flavors, and where that would be nurtured.”

The nurturing continues. Peet’s now has 193 stores, and Berkeley has hundreds of cafes.

But the craving for coffee only grows.

“It’s an unquenching appetite,” said Timber Manhart, owner of Catahoula Coffee cafe and roasters, one of the participants in the Berkeley Coffee Fest.

These days, the biggest challenge is persuading millions of Peet’s loyalists to try lighter roasts, he said. Like wine, coffee flavors are subtle and highly subjective. And those most serious about their coffee enjoy the ritual as much as the actual product.

“It’s not just the coffee, it’s the culture of coffee,” he said. “We’ve all grown up on Peet’s, but we always want to know about the newest hip buzz.”

Catahouligan Expresso – December 2010

December 6, 2010

Catahouligan Expresso – December 2010

Greetings to everyone and I am sorry I have not written our beloved newsletter for the past couple of months.   Needless to say I have been rather busy both personally and especially with Catahoula Coffee.

  • On September 18, 2010, to the dismay of a great many of my single female Catahouligans worldwide, not to mention a couple of the fella’s too, I got married to the lovely Kate.   My first and last marriage…It took this long to find the right one.  Thank you for all the wonderful best wishes!  We appreciate them.
  • Catahoula Coffee has been increasingly getting busier and busier, heck we were even knock a star on YELP.com by not having enough “Elbow” room.   I guess I would take that as a grand compliment.  It sure beats the many months of Ricky and me watching Youtube videos of Will Farrell doing imitations of Sir Sean Connery waiting for that lone customer to grace our doorway.

We Won!!

“It All Starts with a Café!”

Since Catahoula Coffee has won the San Francisco Chronicle’s Best of Bay, we have steadily been working on improving…and refining everything we do.   Our goal is always to not only be the best in Richmond…but of the whole bay…..err, Nation!

I would like to say thanks to all of the Catahouligans who not necessarily voted for Catahoula Coffee as Best of Bay…but who frequent our humbled establishment.   To say “Thanks!!”  We will sponsor a Customer Appreciation Day.   I am not sure when…It might be too busy prior to the holidays…and would be nice to dovetail it into our next car meet.   If you have any suggestions…please email them to me:  timber@catahoulacoffee.com I appreciate your feedback.

In the News:

It was SOOOOO close:  Solano Playlot

I am sorry I got so “Spammy” with our constituents on the contest to win a $25,000 grant to rebuild/improve Solano Playlot.  (It was a grassroots effort to win a grant to rebuild neighborhood kid/toddler playlot near Catahoula Coffee’s World Headquarters in Richmond, CA.)

We finished just outside of the money.  It wasn’t from the valiant effort of Catahouligans near and far….It was an unique contest who’s rules were a bit dodgy.   Catahouligans help us to charged out of nowhere to claimed the third place money…but were bumped, nipped and/or squeezed out, by what this cub reporter feels as “Vote Trading” from the others playgrounds in contention.   Needless to say, we finished fourth by the smallest of margin.

Holidays:

They are fast approaching.   Catahoula Coffee is there to help.  We are working on several items to help you covert that special person in your life to the world of Catahoula Coffee.   These are a couple of things we are working on:

  • Pre-Made Gift Baskets.   Ranging from $15.00 to $45.00 -  If you don’t see what you like…we’ll make it up for you.
  • Catahoula “Houla Moola” Giftcards:  Give the gift that keeps on giving.   How Easy was that…..Add any amount to the card…then they are able to redeem the card….and earn free drinks to boot.
  • Custom Made Catahoula Shopping Bags:  Recycled coffee burlap bags made into stylish, and rugged, shopping bags.   Each bag has been recycled from the bags being delivered to Catahoula.   Quality, size and quantities do vary since they are subject to bags on hand. Range in price from $15.00 to $35.00    We will also have Recycled Coffee Burlap (Reusable) coffee cup holders.  (Coming Soon)
  • Custom Cup Snuggies:  Handmade cup holders made by Green Being of Scranton, PA
  • Travel Mugs / Stylish Diner Mugs / AeroPress Coffee Makers:   These are few items available for this Holiday Season.
  • Customized Labels (Seen Below) :  Minimum of six pounds ordered…you can then have a custom message to given out to those on the “Nice” column of your Who’s Naughty or Nice list.
  • New Teeshirts:  The “Lola” tee is winner!!
  • Shipping Nationwide:   At Catahoula we utilize USPS Flat Rate Shipping.  If we can squeeze it into the box…it ships.   Last year several Catahouligans made up Custom Labels for friends and relatives across the states and had us mail them out.   We will roast, bag and ship in one day.   (The trick is….timing to get them before the Holiday.)
  • If I have forgotten something:    You’ll let me know!

Custom Labels

Up Cycle Items:

  • Tote Bags:  Custom made Tote Bags made from Recycled (or Upcycled) coffee bags used at Catahoula Coffee.   They range from $15 to $40 apiece.
  • Cup Snuggies: Way Cool cup holders made by Greenbeings of Scranton, PA   Personalized with logo of your favorite coffee company…..Catahoula right!?   Not too sure what the pricepoint….roughly:  $10.99 or 11.99    Reusable!!!

Operation “Mi Pueblo” –

If you have not heard of Mi Pueblo yet….You should. ( www.mipueblofoods.com )  I firmly believe our neighborhood would be an EXCELLENT candidate for this organization.  It’s not like we don’t have a couple of prime locations for a clean, well lit and quite well stocked grocery store.   Can you say:  “THE OLD ALBERTSON’S STORE!!!”      But there is also Safeway when it goes dark and even an outside chance of West Coast Motors site.

I am willing to bet anyone…. and I mean anyone:  If Mi Pueblo would locate within the area of San Pablo Ave & Mcdonald Ave….it would be extremely successful.   Not only would they be supported by the surrounding neighborhoods of N&E, View & El Cerrito….but it would draw folks out of the hills and down to the AVENUE.

What can WE do?     How about a 10,000 Email Campaign:    Yep, you heard me right….Let’s use the power of the “Inter-Tube” and let Mi Pueblo know our fair city would be excellent choice for their business.   Email today!!!!  (And tomorrow, the next day….even the day after)

So email them with a brief note…stating:  I, state your name, would like to see Mi Pueblo Food Center open up on the AVENUE.    Oh, by the way, here is the email for the head cheese (or queso in their case) of Mi Pueblo:

Juvenal Chavez, CEO / Founder  juvenal.chavez@mipueblofoods.com

Pre-addressed “We Want Mi Pueblo on the AVENUE!” postcards will be soon available at Catahoula Coffee Company.

Coffee:

Coffee prices have SKYROCKETED this past year.   This is not just a swarmy businessman trying to juke you.   Prices have increased due to several issues….mainly due to the “C” market (Think Porkbellies) being played by folks who are looking for a return on their investments since global meltdown of their standard financial investments.   Toss in political unrest in this country and bad weather in that country has also contributed in pushing coffee prices higher.

I am doing my best to hold our prices at Catahoula Coffee.   I am quite thankful of being in a position of advantage compared to the others….but coffee prices are coffee prices.   I will always source the very best in terms of quality with an eye on promoting sustainability.   It is a tough act to follow….but Catahoula Coffee will continue to strive in obtaining the highest quality in our coffees, all the while trying to improve our community.

The Standards:

Lola, Buzz, Butkus, Mokka Java, Sumatra, Decaf, Costa Rica & Peru

Let’s not forget The 3 Amigas (Mexican Chiapas roasted at three different levels)

Micro Roasts:

Jamaica Blue Mountain, Peru Pangoa, Papua New Guinea PB, & Kenya PB

The Micro Roasts are small batches, (a couple of bags of coffee), I would like to feature for you try.  Plus a Micro Roast is a single origin coffee which we currently carry such as Kenyan Peaberry.   My goal is for the average Catahouligan to sample a coffee they wouldn’t necessarily try or even know existed.

  • World Class Coffee.  (Jamaica Blue Mountain)
  • From single estates with unique production processes (Honey Coffee – Dry Processed)
  • Truly wonderful and inspirational stories behind them.  The Peru Pangoa (FTO) is a fine example.
  • Most of these coffees are sold out quickly while others are rotated into our lineup  periodically

MICRO ROAST – ONE

100% Jamaica Blue Mountain –  $20.00 / Half Pound  — $40.00 / Full Pound

What hasn’t been said about this coffee, it is truly one of the BEST coffees in the world!  This coffee is known to be rich, well balanced and yet with a buttery feel to the cup.

It was difficult to find JBM this year.  However, I have sourced a keg.  You will have an opportunity to “WOW!” your in-laws or reward the ones (and yourself) you love with some of the BEST coffee in the world.   (Seriously!!)

MICRO ROAST – TWO

Peru Organic/Fair Trade – Pangoa Region: – $14.00 / Full Pound

I came across this coffee via a third party; kinda’ a friend of friend sort of way.  After reading up on this region and the works of other roasters/importers I was truly happy to see Royal Coffee Imports (RCI) had this wonderful coffee in stock.   RCI was instrumental in the continual support of this coffee.

This coffee has everything:  Fair Trade, Organic, Shade Grown, promotion of economic diversification, all the while having a solid record of self reliance in improving the lot of both the farmers and its indigenous peoples.

The coffee itself is wonderful Organic Peruvian, grown higher in altitude which produces a nice balance of complexity to its body.

About PANGOA:

Tucked away in the central Amazon region of Peru, just east of the Andean mountain range that runs through the center of the country, CAC Pangoa (Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera Pangoa) has been serving its members since 1977.  The coop has experienced a colorful history of good and hard times.  It was founded by 50 farmers from a coop in neighboring city, Satipo and grew to nearly 1700 members at its peak (in the early 1980s).  With 3% of every sale, Pangoa was able to build most of the infrastructure that it uses to this day.  During the period that’s known as El Terrorismo (“the terrorism”) when the Shining Path violently swept through what had up to the late ’80s the peaceful, isolated, rural areas of Peru, killing thousands of innocent people and carrying out a determined campaign of instilling paralyzing fear.  CAC Pangoa lost hundreds of farmers who fled to cities to escape the terror.  Since then, they have regained membership and currently serve approximately 600 members (2009).

MICRO ROAST – THREE

Roastermaster’s Whim: – $12.00 to $15.00 / Pound

There are times we will roast a particular single origin to encourage folks to try something they normally do not see or get an opportunity to taste.  Kenyan PB is prime example; however it may be a single bag of coffee I am experimenting with at the time.

Note: I will be roasting a Costa Rica “Honey” La Granja coffee from Coopepalmares PL of region surrounding La Palmares, CR.   Terrific “Dried Processed” coffee that gives sweet complexity to a great Costa Rica coffee.   $12.00 / Pound

If you have any questions about any coffees, especially these three Micro Roasts, please do not hesitate to contact me:   timber@catahoulacoffee.com

Thanks again…..I hope everyone has a great holiday!!!

take care,     timber

Contra Contra Times: 11/24/09

November 25, 2009

the following is an article in the Contra Contra Times Newspaper:

THE FIRST THING you notice about the Catahoula Coffee Company is that the location on San Pablo Avenue is all wrong.

Next door is a boarded-up housing project. Across the street is a liquor store. A half-block south is a smog-check station, and to the north is an auto body repair shop. Is this any place for a coffee house? “It’s the perfect place,” said Jovanka Beckles, a regular, “because it’s right here in the neighborhood.”

The neighborhood is the North and East neighborhood of Richmond, which often is identified as something other than a destination for exotic coffee blends. Tim Manhart — friends call him Timber — is the man who made it happen. With a considerable investment of time and money — his shiny red, 100,000-BTU coffee roaster cost $40,000 — he has built a loyal following in two years and has helped pull a community together.

He has hosted neighborhood events — farmers markets, car shows, art fairs, musical performances — and poured free Java for communal gatherings such as Tent Cities and neighborhood council meetings. He donates coffee for fundraising auctions to help schools and local charities.

“I wanted to do this for years,” he said of the cafe. “People are always looking for a place to hang out. But every time I got started, I’d run out of money.”

Patrons first were attracted by the coffee and the roasting show, which Manhart supervises with a stopwatch hanging from his neck and an eye on the temperature gauge. The beans require special attention — not too hot, not too long — before raking and packaging.

What keeps customers coming back is something less tangible. “It reminds me of the old coffee shops with couches and lounge chairs,” said Ellen Seskin, who visits several times a week. “It doesn’t look like that, but it feels like that. It really brings people together.” Word has spread, as glowing reviews on yelp.com attest. Dozens recommend the coffee, but they just as often applaud the owner’s effect on the area.

Some excerpts:
“Timber is really involved in the community and a force for good in the neighborhood. We need more business owners like him.”
“Catahoula isn’t just about the eye candy and atmosphere; it’s about the people, the neighborhood and coffee.”
“He helps other locals promote business as well as his own. That’s the kind of guy you want roasting your beans.”

It nearly never happened. When Manhart moved from Omaha, Neb., to Richmond in 1999, it was to take a job that didn’t work out. He then focused on a housekeeping service, Merry Maids, which he still runs from a building next to the coffee shop. When that enterprise blossomed, he could afford to pursue his obsession, which remains a labor of love. (“We’re holding our own,” he said, “but I wouldn’t say we’re profitable. I’m not taking a salary out of this.”) His personal attachment is unmistakable.

The shop is named after his favorite breed of dog. The bags in which the coffee is packaged bear the image of Mocha, his pet catahoula.

There’s nothing remotely corporate about the operation. “People come to the place with their kids,” Seskin said. “People bring their dogs and sit outside. He’s trying to get a community feeling going — not just to sell coffee, but to bring the neighborhood together.” Manhart said he once was told by a neighborhood “all begins with a cafe.”

He has found a lot of friends in Richmond who agree.

  • Nothing is on the schedule as of late….but that will change.   Summers are the time when folks always seem to be busy.

Coffee:

  • FRESHNESS:  As Catahoula Coffee grows, with the help of our new website, it will difinitely help in the rotation of our coffees.  I know there have been times, and occasionally still will be times, when you come to Catahoula only to be slightly bummed out about not having your favorite coffee/blend.   Granted, it will never be totally perfect for precisely one reason…”I really want to have the freshest roasted coffee you can buy.”  There are plenty of times I am struggling to keep up to date on my roasts.   I would hope folks can appreciate the difference in coffee that has been sitting on the shelves swedged between the Instant Folgers Freeze Dried or the quasi East Bay “Micro” roaster  – Big Box – to a truly small batch micro roaster; Catahoula Coffee Company.
  • KENYA AAA:   One Last 20 pound batch!!  Here is your chance to enjoy a really good coffee.  I purchased this coffee via an auction which directly supports “Grounds for Health”   This isn’t a typically wine-y African…it has a nice complexity in the body and pull, a bit one dimensional, as a shot of espresso it has a think rich crema.  Only $10/lb – (This in not on the website)
  • MOCHA-JAVA:   Since Yemen is now back in stock, I can now roast Mocha-Java.  This is Catahoula’s own take on this blend of antiquity.  Only $12/lb.
  • COSTA RICA – SAN ISIDRO / PN – WOMAN OWNED COOP:   Delicious, simply delicious!  I have taken this bean slightly darker than a normal Costa Rican.  The darker roast smoothes out the front end while allowing you to enjoy the complexity of the Pulp Natural process.  Sweet, Syrupy and a tad hint of Carmel-ishly Chocolate.   $12/lb
  • MEXICAN CHIAPAS:  Since El Salvador – Cerro las Ranas is out of season, this Mexican is back and is a great substitute for the El Salvador:   Sweet, Mellow and Gentle in your cup.   I am sure Ricky will be brewing this while the USA plays Mexico on August 12th.   Only $10/lb.

Thanks for your time!  I certainly appreciate your business and support.   Please tell your family and friends about the new www.catahoulacoffee.com website.

take care,     timber
