Contra Contra Times: 11/24/09

November 25, 2009 by catahoulacoffee

the following is an article in the Contra Contra Times Newspaper:

THE FIRST THING you notice about the Catahoula Coffee Company is that the location on San Pablo Avenue is all wrong.

Next door is a boarded-up housing project. Across the street is a liquor store. A half-block south is a smog-check station, and to the north is an auto body repair shop. Is this any place for a coffee house? “It’s the perfect place,” said Jovanka Beckles, a regular, “because it’s right here in the neighborhood.”

The neighborhood is the North and East neighborhood of Richmond, which often is identified as something other than a destination for exotic coffee blends. Tim Manhart — friends call him Timber — is the man who made it happen. With a considerable investment of time and money — his shiny red, 100,000-BTU coffee roaster cost $40,000 — he has built a loyal following in two years and has helped pull a community together.

He has hosted neighborhood events — farmers markets, car shows, art fairs, musical performances — and poured free Java for communal gatherings such as Tent Cities and neighborhood council meetings. He donates coffee for fundraising auctions to help schools and local charities.

“I wanted to do this for years,” he said of the cafe. “People are always looking for a place to hang out. But every time I got started, I’d run out of money.”

Patrons first were attracted by the coffee and the roasting show, which Manhart supervises with a stopwatch hanging from his neck and an eye on the temperature gauge. The beans require special attention — not too hot, not too long — before raking and packaging.

What keeps customers coming back is something less tangible. “It reminds me of the old coffee shops with couches and lounge chairs,” said Ellen Seskin, who visits several times a week. “It doesn’t look like that, but it feels like that. It really brings people together.” Word has spread, as glowing reviews on yelp.com attest. Dozens recommend the coffee, but they just as often applaud the owner’s effect on the area.

Some excerpts:
“Timber is really involved in the community and a force for good in the neighborhood. We need more business owners like him.”
“Catahoula isn’t just about the eye candy and atmosphere; it’s about the people, the neighborhood and coffee.”
“He helps other locals promote business as well as his own. That’s the kind of guy you want roasting your beans.”

It nearly never happened. When Manhart moved from Omaha, Neb., to Richmond in 1999, it was to take a job that didn’t work out. He then focused on a housekeeping service, Merry Maids, which he still runs from a building next to the coffee shop. When that enterprise blossomed, he could afford to pursue his obsession, which remains a labor of love. (“We’re holding our own,” he said, “but I wouldn’t say we’re profitable. I’m not taking a salary out of this.”) His personal attachment is unmistakable.

The shop is named after his favorite breed of dog. The bags in which the coffee is packaged bear the image of Mocha, his pet catahoula.

There’s nothing remotely corporate about the operation. “People come to the place with their kids,” Seskin said. “People bring their dogs and sit outside. He’s trying to get a community feeling going — not just to sell coffee, but to bring the neighborhood together.” Manhart said he once was told by a neighborhood “all begins with a cafe.”

He has found a lot of friends in Richmond who agree.

Catahouligan Expresso – August 09

Catahoula Coffee Staff

Catahoula Coffee Staff

Hi folks, it’s me again.  It has been rather chaotic as of late….which is a good thing.

Since there is an event I wanted to let you know about on August 2nd….I figured I should get a little ahead of the game.   So here is your August Catahouligan Expresso.

Again, thank you to those who helped in the Beta testing of our new website.  Granted it still needs some fine tuning (grammar)…but it’s ready to go.

Order Early – Order Often!

In The News:

  • Please do not hesitate to tell your family and friends they can now order Catahoula Coffee from anywhere in the Good Ole’ U-S-of-A.

Please Note:   You DO NOT have to join Paypal to use its Order Portal.  It is not too clear when ordering: but press “continue” and you will go to the checkout screen in Paypal’s Secured Encrypted Credit Card Processing System. Catahoula Coffee does not have a record of your Credit Card numbers.  It all goes through Paypal’s system.

  • If you missed the KQED radio interview about watching the Tour de France in Catahoula Coffee -  Here is the link to the podcast:

www.californiareport.org/archive/R907241630/e

Please do me a favor….listen to the podcast and LEAVE A COMMENT.  The author of the piece, Mr. Brekke, of KQED mentioned they were quite impressed with how many people have listened to the podcast and also how many who have commented about the program.

Comment Line will close August 7th -  Have some fun!!

Catahouligan’s Unite!

Listen and please leave a comment  -  Thanks,  timber

Upcoming Events:

  • Sunday August 2nd:   Bay to Barkers  -  Golden Gate Fields  – Albany, CA

Catahoula Coffee is proud to support Berkeley SPCA’s Annual event of Bay to Barkers Event.  It is all things dogs; including dog walks, vendors of pet products and events your beloved pooch can participate in.  There will also be contests, spa treatments (for you dog), games and creative craft events for those of us who choose to walk on two legs.

For more info:  http://baytobarkers.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=314678

Catahoula Coffee will be setting up a Coffee Drip Bar with plenty of pastries to buy.  Remember our wonderful summer: …..Bring a sweater…Catahoula will have the fresh brewed HOT coffee.

  • August 12th -  USA vs. Mexico Soccer Match  -  Catahoula Coffee

I have been checking the time when this epic game will be televised, and Catahoula Coffee will be open.  Barista Ricky will be pulling excellent shots of espresso all the while proudly sporting his Mexico jersey.   Come down, enjoy espresso and root for your favorite team.  Kick Off is at 1pm PST.  (Not sure what folks do start the game: Kick Off, Rock/Paper/Scissors, or Some Kind of a Soccer Dance Off)

  • Late August:   Charity Concert for Team in Training -  Work in Progress

Catahoula Coffee will help one of our local Catahouligans in a Charity Concert (of a well known local artist) in her bid to run her first Marathon this September.   All proceeds (donations) will help in the support of funding blood cancer research while providing education and patient services.

Please stay tuned for further info on the Party in the Parking Lot

  • The Elusive Car Meet/Art Show – Work in Progress

I am driving myself crazy….there has been plenty of interest…(It’s sort of like herding cats….)  I just need to pick a date.  End of August is the latest timeline.

Again…Please stay tuned.

Music:

  • Nothing is on the schedule as of late….but that will change.   Summers are the time when folks always seem to be busy.

Coffee:

  • FRESHNESS:  As Catahoula Coffee grows, with the help of our new website, it will difinitely help in the rotation of our coffees.  I know there have been times, and occasionally still will be times, when you come to Catahoula only to be slightly bummed out about not having your favorite coffee/blend.   Granted, it will never be totally perfect for precisely one reason…”I really want to have the freshest roasted coffee you can buy.”  There are plenty of times I am struggling to keep up to date on my roasts.   I would hope folks can appreciate the difference in coffee that has been sitting on the shelves swedged between the Instant Folgers Freeze Dried or the quasi East Bay “Micro” roaster  – Big Box – to a truly small batch micro roaster; Catahoula Coffee Company.
  • KENYA AAA:   One Last 20 pound batch!!  Here is your chance to enjoy a really good coffee.  I purchased this coffee via an auction which directly supports “Grounds for Health”   This isn’t a typically wine-y African…it has a nice complexity in the body and pull, a bit one dimensional, as a shot of espresso it has a think rich crema.  Only $10/lb – (This in not on the website)
  • MOCHA-JAVA:   Since Yemen is now back in stock, I can now roast Mocha-Java.  This is Catahoula’s own take on this blend of antiquity.  Only $12/lb.
  • COSTA RICA – SAN ISIDRO / PN – WOMAN OWNED COOP:   Delicious, simply delicious!  I have taken this bean slightly darker than a normal Costa Rican.  The darker roast smoothes out the front end while allowing you to enjoy the complexity of the Pulp Natural process.  Sweet, Syrupy and a tad hint of Carmel-ishly Chocolate.   $12/lb
  • MEXICAN CHIAPAS:  Since El Salvador – Cerro las Ranas is out of season, this Mexican is back and is a great substitute for the El Salvador:   Sweet, Mellow and Gentle in your cup.   I am sure Ricky will be brewing this while the USA plays Mexico on August 12th.   Only $10/lb.

Thanks for your time!  I certainly appreciate your business and support.   Please tell your family and friends about the new www.catahoulacoffee.com website.

take care,     timber

Catahoula Expresso: May 09

Catahouligan Expresso – May 09

Hello, Hello….Hello! It has been rather busy as of late. It seems each time I turn around someone is barking at me; “We Need More…Lola or Peru and/or Moka-Java….” I do apologize if there has been a time you have ventured down to Catahoula only to find your favorite beans are out of stock.
I guess that’s the bad news…However, the good news is ….it tells ya how fresh, as in “Fresh Roasted”, the coffee is at Catahoula Coffee.

This past weekend is a classic example. I DID roast for the weekend!!! However, once I got back I was informed…”We are outa coffee!!!” Whaaaaaaaaat!? Yesh!!

On a Side Note:
Catahoula Coffee must be turning into a “Real” café…. (Do you remember when you were able to have the café all to yourself for hours on end??) I’ve definitely seen some changes. Not just the number of folks who are now regulars, or the fact it is nice to see local business people “taking meetings” at the shop…but it’s the fact our ultra-cool “No Char” coffee mugs are disappearing!!! I would only like to say……..
Come on folks, quit stealing the mugs!!!! 

Have You Seen Me!?

Have You Seen Me!?

Did you know each mug has a microchip that can trace them to your house…..so don’t be too surprised if you see me and the Catahoula Mug Patrol (The CMP) showing up on your doorstep. You know who you are….besides you can buy one for $8.00

So what’s going on……

Music:
• Friday Night: May 8th – 7pm-ish
Steve Seskin and Friends @ The Freight
(And Pizza!)
This is a shout out to let’s get together and enjoy a show at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley to watch our own Catahouligan Steve Seskin play a Folk Set with two wonderful artists from LA. I figure it would be fun to show up and support Steve on his own turf. If you don’t know who Steve Seskin is or even the Freight and Salvage…I would encourage you to Google them for additional information.
Game Plan: I plan to go to “Lane Splitters” for Pizza and Beer at roughly 7pm. (Good pie / nice selection of micro brews) Then I will try to sneak in some Catahoula Coffee and heckle…errr watch Steve Seskin and duo of Sweet Talk Radio.
Info: www.steveseskin.com www.freightandsalvage.org www.lanesplitterpizza.com
Contact: If you are interested, drop me an email at timber@catahoulacoffee.com You will be responsible for your own ticket, pizza and most of your beers. Hope to see some Catahouligans…time to get that babysitter lined up, eh!

• Wednesday Night: May 20th – 7pm to 8:30pm

support-the-band-ash

ASH
Please join us at Catahoula Coffee for a Folk Rock Trio headed by fellow Catahouligan Harry Gray. Harry and the crew again will play their originals and a few covers in a delightful mix of harmonies and acoustic strings. Our last “night music series” filled the joint…so come early to snag a good seat….or coffee bag.

SUPPORT OUR LOCAL ARTISTS!!

Events:
• Saturday May 9th: 10am to 3pm – Annie Annuals Mother’s Day Celebration:

If you haven’t been to an Annie’s Annuals event, let alone, even to Annie Annuals….You are missing out. A Catahoula Drip Bar will be there on Saturday May 9th to serve you fresh brewed coffee whilst you peruse the incredible selection of flowers, plantings and veggies this Local Richmond Institution is nationally known for…..It truly is a GEM!!

Coffee:ground-for-health1
You will see this logo on a few upcoming roasts at Catahoula Coffee. What is it: Grounds for Health is an organization whose main purpose is to go to the beginning of the coffee chain and try to help improve the health and well being of those who need it the most. Bags of coffee are donated from a variety of different sources and we, the roasters, bid for the lot. This past auction raised over $22,000 dollars for Grounds for Health.

I was able to purchase a nice Peru Cooparm and a Kenya AAA. (I missed out on the Panama Esmeralda Reserved – my final bid was $28.00/pound (green). This is the very same coffee that sold for $133.00/pound (green) last year. Oh well, maybe next year. )

• That’s about all….the coffee I purchase in Costa Rica – Coopepalamares – San Isidro PN (Certified Woman Owned) is on its way (It is sure giving me an inside perspective to the timeline of when coffee is ordered…and when coffee is actually delivered.
take care, timber

ROAST BY ORDER:

  • You order it….I roast it.  As the volume fluctuates, online orders are basically roasted to order.  Say you order the $20 option for a pound and half beans (freight paid), we’ll send out what has been just roasted or which will be roasted. (Your order might be slightly delayed)   Thus our goal is send the coffee out Priority Mail to insure the beans received are only two to three days old.  How’s that for fresh!?

  •  It will be secured via Paypal. Check out:  www.flickr.com (Catahoula Coffee) and www.catahoulacoffee.wordpress.com   I may send out the Catahouligan Expresso thru the Web Blog in the future.  ( I am still trying to figure it out….)

 Diner Cup

NEW COFFEE:  EL SALAVDOR – Cerro las Ranas PN

  • PN = Pulped Natural aka: Honey.  The cherries are skinned and the mucilage is left on the bean as it dries on the patio.  It produces a sweeter cup.
  • This new Organic/Fair Trade coffee comes from San Franicso Estate of Jose Antonio and Aida Batalle.   The following is excerpt from Royal Coffee:

San Francisco Estate is located between the Apenaca and Ateno mountain ranges at an altitude between 1450 and 1780 meters in Santa Ana, El Salvador. Owned and operated by JASAL, the home of Jose Antonio Salaverria and Aida Batalle, the finca itself takes its name from a lagoon that is populated by thousands of frogs (Cerro Las Ranas means Hill of the Frogs, if your Spanish needs brushing up). Cerro is the pride and joy of Don Jose Antonio and since the devastating Santa Ana Volcano eruption in October, 2005, he has restored the farm to pristine shape. Ripe (really ripe) red cherry is picked and delivered to Las Cruces Mill where it undergoes a process pioneered by JASAL that is now becoming more and more common throughout Central America. The cherry is processed normally but the coffee is then immediately sent to the clay drying patios still covered in the sticky mucilage where it is laid out and constantly raked and turned to ensure even drying. This process (called Pulped Natural or Honey) imparts a subtle sweetness and fruit note, lending an atypical complexity to the cup.

  • Google “Aida Batlle” for additional info.  She has really has helped El Salvador make its mark in the coffee world.  Truly a diamond in the rough, considering the troubles of that country.
  • Just roasted a batch….very tasty.   A tad sweeter than the Mexican Chiapas while it holds it’s smoothness through the finish.
  • Ten ($10) Bucks a pound.

COFFEE IN PRODUCTION:

  • El Salvador – Cerro las Ranas PN (O/FT), Peru (O/FT), Sumatra Decaf (H20/O), Mexican Chiapas (O/FT), Costa Rica (O/FT), Sumatra (O), Rwanda Bourbon, Indian Monsoon Malabar, Yemen
  • Mokka-Java, Ricky’s Buzz Blend, and of course:  LOLA (She’s so Sweet)*

*Lola is a blend of African and Central American coffees.  Please note though African coffees may not be “Certified” O or FT but a Women’s COOP coffee is being used in this blend.

Thanks again….remember get out there and VOTE next Tuesday.   Otherwise, quit yer bitchin’!

take care,    timber

Victory Garden at Catahoula Coffee

October 21, 2008 by catahoulacoffee

Iron Curtain:

The Great Wall of Catahoula is slowly but surely being finished.  The “Compound” is now secured and plans to build raised garden beds of a Victory Garden will be on the docket soon.   This author will keep you posted on the “Call of Arms” in helping building said Victory Garden.

The new gate is up and the first phase of the wire mesh will eliminate the night time extra curricular activities which occasionally transact in the parking lot behind Catahoula.  Now it’s time to build on the collective energies of the locals to create a nice outdoor space.

A big Thanks to Willy for his welding of the wire mesh.

5:30am Roast

Up and at them!!! Busy, busy weekend!!  Not only did Catahoula host our house jazz Trio….but we also had a booth at the Home Front Festival at the Ford Point.   Plenty of fellow Catahouligans made their way to grab a cup-of-hula. Plus we met new future Catahouligans.

Puff the Magic Dragon Set….

August 3, 2008 by catahoulacoffee

Though Singer/Guitarist/Soloist Harry Gray’s first set was a bit slower than normal……After all, it is the last of the lazy dayz of Summer, the kids started to pour into Catahoula for Mr. Gray’s second “Puff the Magic Dragon” set.  To the delight of children, young & old, the sing-along went swimmingly well.  The  rambunctious rendition of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” brought down the house.  (The only thing missing….little pic lighters waving above their heads…..)

Seriously folks, it was fun.  The kids, let alone the parents, were well mannered, sang along and interacted with Mr. Gray as he sang.

Mr. Gray will play at Catahoula Coffee the First Sunday of the Month from 10am – 12 Noon.

The “Puff the Magic Dragon” set starts at: 11am.

Thanks to everyone….I appreciate your support.
